THE LARGE FORMAT The new building is located in the plot on the corner of Hegenheimermattweg and Kreuzstrasse, on the so-called BaseLink site in Allschwil near Basel. Stacked wide-span exposed-concrete bands divide the building into horizontal layers. They define the building up to the boundary of the plot and determine its large-format urban scale. Inside, horizon-forming wooden slat ceilings continue the large format and heighten the effect of the open office floor plans. Atriums spanning several storeys penetrate the horizontal ground plan and create spatial references from bottom to top. Symbolic of the bringing-together of the institute in one place, the central access atrium becomes the spatial and functional centre of the facility.
