Beat Aeberhard is the master builder of Basel-Stadt. In this role, he has headed the Urban Planning & Architecture department since 2015, which comprises the Spatial Planning, Urban Planning, Urban Space, Building Construction, Building Management and Cantonal Monument Preservation departments. Prior to this, he was the city architect of Zug for six years. From 2005, he ran his own architectural practice in Zurich and taught at ETH Zurich. He studied architecture at ETH Lausanne and ETH Zurich as well as urban design at Columbia University in New York, where he graduated with honours. He was also a research assistant at Columbia’s Urban Design Programme.
